When I was 8 years old, I went on a field trip to a ranch that was about an hour away from Lima. I remember how great it was being there with all my friends, learning about animals, and simply being able to play and run around. Towards the end of the day, a friend and I wandered off to the horse stables where I found 1 Peruvian sol (Peruvian currency). My first reaction was to use the money I found to ride the horses, I was so excited! As we made our way to pay, my friend began to tell me how she had never rode a horse before, her parents would not be able to afford it, and how she didn't think she would ever have the chance to do it. My 8 year-old heart was torn to pieces and I graciously gave her the money so she could ride instead of me. I thought to myself: "I'm sure I will get another chance to ride a horse for the first time."
Well, 20-something years later I was finally able to. Though I never regretted my decision, I felt pretty silly for all these years. I told my husband the story one day and a few weeks later, when I had forgotten all about it, he surprised me with having arranged for us to go horseback riding together :)
It's crazy to think that even though I love these beautiful animals, I never actually looked for the opportunity to experience this. I must say it was worth the wait and even more so because I got to ride into the sunset with my partner in crime ha!
I am glad this story had a happy ending, I mean, can't you tell from the big smile on my face? :D
Meet Charm, my very first horse riding experience. She was wonderful, even though she got startled by my husband's horse biting her butt. It was an experience like no other!
